For this assignment, you will have a chance to apply what you have learned thus far. Now that you are familiar with the five steps of the EBP approach and have guidelines in place for how you will implement them, you will take a stab at doing so.
This week’s resources include a review of the resources from the text that describe the five steps of the EBP approach. You are also provided with a link to a series of resources related to Evidence-Based Practices. Browse the website and the various links to gain insights about preparing your EBP treatment plan. You are also encouraged to review an article from last week (Clement, 2013), as it will help you complete the second assignment for this week.
After reviewing these resources, you will formulate a hypothetical clinical scenario related to your PCF and prepare an EBP treatment plan to address this scenario. You will also discuss, in its current state of development, your current framework for evaluating the effectiveness of your clinical work. Note that these strategies will likely change as you begin to apply them in clinical practice.
Carefully review this week’s resources. You will be expected to apply the information from these resources when you prepare your assignments.

For this assignment, prepare comprehensive EBP treatment plan for a hypothetical Presenting Problem (PP) scenario. This is how you should proceed:
Begin with a hypothetical clinical scenario (a member of a client family [couple or family] calls seeking therapy for [formulate a possible presenting problem], flesh out a possible brief history of the problem, and then create a succinct summary of what you learned from the clients in the first session).

Use the guidelines you have written for Assignment 9.1 to apply the EBP approach to this presenting problem.

Specifically, you will:

Convert the issue into an answerable question. Write the question and indicate what type of clinical question it is (a who, what, where, when or why question). Explain why.

Practice locating research articles that address the issue. Describe what resources and databases you might use to locate various types of articles for the issue. If you use the library resources to find relevant articles, see if you are able to find the same article using resources outside the university library. Were you able to access the article without using the library? Would you have had to pay for the article if you no longer had access to a university library?

Select one research study that you found related to the clinical issue and complete an evaluation of it using the guidelines you included in your EBP resource guide from last week. Describe what you found to assess the quality of this article using your strategies for evaluating research.

Explain, in detail, how you would apply the research findings to your work with your hypothetical clients in your hypothetical clinical context (assuming the study is of quality). Then, clarify all relevant diversity/contextual relation variables associated with this situation and indicate how they may impact the utility of the evidence you found (e.g., if the study used a European or an American sample, will it apply to your Latina client?).

Identify the specific measures, tools, and procedures you would use to assess the effectiveness of your EBP interventions with these clients.

Clement, P. (2013). Practice-based evidence: 45 years of psychotherapy’s effectiveness in a private practice. American Journal of Psychotherapy, 67, 23-46.
Now that you have prepared an EBP treatment plan, you can speculate what it will look like for you in the future when you need to evaluate the implementation of EBP into your clinical work.
For this assignment, you will propose and describe a personal clinical research process/framework for gathering data to evaluate the effectiveness of your future clinical work. To do so, reflect on how you will monitor whether the decisions you make following the EBP approach have been successful? This may involve including formal assessment tools at regular intervals to track progress for clients. As you consider doing something like this, please articulate whether or not you plan to take some of the actions articulated by Clement (2013) about how he evaluated his clinical work. It could also take the form of informal conversations with clients about how they are experiencing the shifts you made. Remember that Williams et al. (2014) presented ideas for talking with clients about the EBP approach and drawing them in to the process. These ideas might be useful to inform your integration of some type of self-assessment. The goal of this assignment is to have you reflect on how you will know if you are effectively using the EBP approach.
