Sample Political Science Paper on Impact of Ebola

Impact of Ebola

Ebola is a strain of virus that causes the Ebola virus disease, which infects primates mainly. Although the disease is more prevalent in monkeys, humans will occasionally be infected from their interaction with animals and this can lead to a pandemic due to its high infection rate. As of August Two Thousand and Fourteen, over two thousand people had been infected and one thousand deaths reported in several West African states. As shown below, the outbreak has influenced international policies and has worried security experts as its potency makes it suitable for biological warfare.

The outbreak of Ebola has led to the issuance of travel advisories to many countries and this has caused a strain on international relationships. The issuance of travel advisories to countries that have had cases diagnosed has led to disagreements between governments especially between Europe, North America and Africa. The outbreak has therefore led to a breakdown in communication between the leaders of countries where the disease has been detected and the leaders of countries that have banned travel to those countries. The lack of communication has made international policing activities more difficult as nations refuse to cooperate with one another leading to increased insecurity more so in the less developed regions of the world. This is because militia groups can communicate with one another more easily and transport their weapons or merchandise with less risk of different policing groups being informed of their activities. The spread of Ebola within the West African region has also made policing difficult as policemen must also fear for their lives and are not willing to risk infection. This means that areas where Ebola cases have been diagnosed lack the security necessary to maintain peace and social order.

Ebola does not yet have a viable cure and this has caused many security officials to worry about its potential to be used as a bio-weapon. Ebola is also a highly transmittable disease and would be the preferred virus of choice for many terrorists if they resorted to chemical warfare. The Ebola virus is also easy to acquire due to its presence in primates. It is therefore very easy for a terrorist group to acquire enough samples of it to conduct research on having it weaponized. The lethal nature of Ebola and its high transmittable rate has however prevented it from being used as facilities necessary to study it safely are out of the financial capabilities of many organizations. The use of Ebola as a weapon also does not require for the development of highly efficient lab specimens. The virus spreads through body fluids and bodies of those who died of it are extremely potent. By dumping the bodies in a town’s water supply or even within  a community it is very easy to infect a few and even if not killing many to spread fear and panic which is part of terrorists mission.

Ebola is a highly lethal disease whose outbreak in two thousand and fourteen has strained international relationships and led to an increase in insecurity regionally and internationally. The spread of the disease has led to governments failing to share information regarding terrorism as well as failure of police in the infected areas performing their duties. Ebola is highly infectious and lethal and many security groups fear that it could be used as a weapon in chemical warfare. As more is studied on the disease, it is hoped that either a cure or a vaccine will be developed.
