When faced with a problem, I would look for the best way to solve that problem, and in this case, I would follow the following method. First, I would start by defining the problem itself before taking any step towards solving the problem. In defining the problem, I would look at the problem itself and decide what I want to achieve once I solve the problem. Once I define the problem, then I would write the problem down to know everything that pertains to it. Second, I would analyze the problem to understand everything that constitutes that problem. Third, it is after analyzing the problem I would move towards generating possible solutions to that problem, and in the process of generating possible solutions, I would be broad minded (Thagard, 2007). By this, I mean that I would write down any possible solution without evaluating it at this instant.
Fourth, after I generate the possible solutions to the problem, then I would analyze each one of the possible solutions by noting their positive and negative aspects. At this point, I would not be evaluating the solutions to select the best solution, but I would be trying to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each possible solution. Fifth, I would then move towards selecting the best solution to my problem based on the evaluation process I would do in the previous step. This would be simple for me because at this point I would be aware of what each solution would mean to the problem. However, I would not stop at this point because I would proceed to the sixth step, which would be to decide what I would do with the solution I would choose for my problem (Thagard, 2007).
At this point, I will apply the above systematic approach in resolving a problem I face within a company I work for. Previously, I did not have a bachelor’s degree, but I have decided to go back to college to enhance my chances of promotion in the same company. In the process of completing my bachelor’s degree, a competing company approaches me for a supervisor’s position. The start date for this job offer is in two weeks during my final exam period for my course. The supervisor’s position offers a salary increase of $15,000 per year, relocation expense and a car allowance. In addition, I have a supervisor that recommends me for this new job. On the other hand, my present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does not offer tuition reimbursement. The following is a systematic approach I would employ in resolving this problem.
First, I would start by defining the problem I face. In this case, the problem I face would be to decide whether to remain in the present company and wait for the promotion to come my way or to go for the new opening in the new company and simply achieve my dream. With respect to this problem, I would write down what I want to achieve once I solve the said problem. This would be to get a promotion in my present company. Second, I would then analyze the problem to understand my current situation in relation to the promotion I want in my present company (Northen, & Kurland, 2001). In addition, I would analyze what is involved in making the problem I define a problem in my case. This would mean analyzing my current education background that constitutes the problem I face. By now, I have achieved what I wanted to achieve to enhance my chances of promotion in my present company.
Third, I would then generate the possible solutions to the problem I face. One solution to this problem would be to reject the new job offer and remain in my present company. Another possible solution would be to accept the new job offer and resign from my present company. At this instant, I would try to generate other possible solutions other than the two solutions. Once I generate these possible solutions, then I would proceed to the fourth stage that would involve analyzing the solutions I have generated in the above step. At this point, I would evaluate the positive and the negative sides of each one of the solutions I generated above (Griffin, 2012). This means that I would evaluate what would happen if I resign from my present company and go to the other company. In simple terms, I would ask myself whether my job at the new company would be secure as it has been in my present company. If my job would not be secure in the new company, then I would not accept the new job offer. On the contrary, if my job in the new company would be secure, then I would consider joining the new company based on the terms the company would offer at me. On the other hand, I would consider what would happen if I remain in my present company in relation to chances of promotion. If it is unlikely that I would be promoted in the present company, then I would consider joining the new company. Conversely, if I might be promoted in my present company, I would consider remaining in my present company. I would consider these factors in resolving the problem I face. After analyzing all these solutions, then I would select the best solution and decide the steps I would take in relation to the solution I would choose.
