How to increase retention of employees in Restaurant business.
Restaurant business and work is mostly physical and hardly any rest-break during work hours as the job demands more from employees.as we cannot change the type of job, working on different aspects to enhance the employer-employee relationship would be a starting point.
If I became a new manager for any restaurant firstly I will try to identify the challenges the restaurant facing, whether it be food supplies or getting more customers into the store or increasing the return on investment. With this being one part of the business aspect, I will also concentrate on the employees.
I will check the team size, each individual’s strengths and weaknesses. By analyzing and observing everyone’s level of work capacity, I would get a clear picture on who would be a best person for a particular task. Apart from this I would also try to maintain healthy relationships with all the team members as it increases the happiness index in the restaurant there by employees start feeling like a team instead of boss and worker. I would also try to understand their challenges – If they are happy with the number of hours or if they need more/less hours. I will try to arrange the schedule accordingly.
Having rapport with employees is top most priority in my list, with current trend in this kind of business this is inevitable. Only when there is a good rapport the employees feel happy to come to work and stick along longer. There are different set of people who asks for work in a restaurant, high school students who are looking for spare money until they find a job of their interest and the full time workers who are experienced.
I will try to have a balance of both, arranging experienced chefs as they know what it takes to get best customer turnover also having high-schoolers or college students as waiters or receptionists. This way it will have a blend of experience as well as fresh look to the restaurant which are both needed.
