Writing Project: Comparing Lightbulbs
Math 120: Quantitative Reasoning for the Sciences
We learned about how electricity is measured and billed here in the United States. We learned how lightbulbs draw electricity and use it to light our homes. You may already know that different types of lightbulbs draw different amounts of electricity. The purpose of this writing project is, essentially, to write an article about lightbulbs. Sounds boring, but your choice of lightbulb (you’ll soon see) makes a difference.
For this assignment, pretend you are writing for a popular magazine which advises consumers about products (such as Consumer Reports). In your article, you’ll be comparing three types of lightbulbs: Compact Florescent Lightbulbs (CFLs), Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), and traditional incandescent bulbs.
Start by watching this video1 produced by the department of energy about lightbulb choices. Then, in order to understand how to measure light, watch this video2 on lumens. These should help you to understand why lightbulb choices matter.
Once you have the background, you’ll need to do some research (probably just on the web) to learn more about the different choices. To guide your research, ask yourself the following questions:
1. How do the prices of the actual bulbs compare to one another?
2. How much do they cost to operate? Do some examples. Maybe count up the number of lightbulbs in your home and work out the numbers to see how much you’d spend if you used all lightbulbs of one type vs. another type.
3. Ignoring the costs, what other factors should the consumer consider (negative effects on the environment, whether or not the bulbs will fit, whether or not the type of emitted light meets your needs, etc.)?
This should be enough to get you started. Remember to show what you’ve learned in the Unit modules. Also, you’ll find many articles about these sorts of things on the web, so search around to find ones that you think are particularly good and use them as a model when you write your own.
