Introduction: This section introduces the topic as well as the importance and purpose of the paper and will lead to a clearly defined question that the paper will address. There are three sections of the introduction: Background, Statement of the Problem, and Purpose.
a. Background: This section should provide relevant background information such as current knowledge or pertinent facts, observations, or claims about the specific topic. b. Statement of the Problem: This section begins to direct the paper to a defined question introduced in the Background section. It should describe a “problem” or gap in the literature supported by previous evidence. The “gap” in the literature will give rise to the question to be addressed in the paper.
c. Objective/Purpose of Paper: This section describes the purpose of the paper and specific knowledge that will be gained from answering the question proposed. For example, the purpose of the paper could be to develop more effective and efficient treatments or to document reliability of exams or tests or to establish relationships between specific variables or to add to the body of knowledge. The specific question to be addressed should be clearly defined in this section of the paper. Do not include the implications in this section as this will be included in the Conclusion section of the paper.
The background should include:
