Research is greatly enhanced by asking some of your friends, peers, co-workers, family, fellow church members, etc. what they think about your topic. Try not to ask leading questions like, “How do we stop unions from forming?” or “Why should everyone be a member of a union?”, but ask more open questions that deal with your topic and can bring you interesting perspectives. Be open to learning that others may not have the same opinions you have and gain their perspective on the issue. You may find out something you had never considered before. I can guarantee you that every time I teach this course, I get a different perspective and opinion that I had not heard before. It helps me learn and grow to listen to how others view this Labor Relations topic. I would love for you to experience this by interviewing several people or conducting your own short survey of a dozen or so people. Here are some very good questions that some of my students have used in the past. Are you a member of a labor union? If so, why? If not, why not? If your union wanted to strike, would you join a picket line? Why or why not? If you were in management and could conduct a lockout on your workers who were demanding higher wages, would you do it? Why or why not? Will unions play a major part in the U.S. fast-food workforce in the future? Why or why not? What are some ways that you have witnessed your bosses negotiate good work conditions or compensation with you or your co-workers? Should public workers be able to strike? Why or why not? What was the worst strike that you have lived through? What happened? Have you ever witnessed union corruption? What can you tell me about it? Have you ever witnessed a company trying to avoid having a union form at their work? If so, what can you tell me about it? If not, have you ever known of such a situation in your town or city? What happened? Have you ever witnessed unfair discrimination towards any particular gender or group of people in a union? If so, what happened? How has collective bargaining worked in your company? Were there any problems with it? Was it an advantage to management or the union to use collective bargaining? How did the XXX(fill in the name of the strike) Strike impact you and your family?
