Analyze a text we have studied (except your Book Club text or the text you used for your short answer responses). You can analyze it from whichever lens you think is suitable and can focus on the form and/or content, such as the theme, style, setting, imagery, language use, tone, etc.
You can use whatever lens you want to analyze the text, but focus your thesis and essay on how/why the author presents their message and/or what effect they aim to create for the reader and why that is significant.
You can use whichever literary lens you want to analyze the story (Formalist/New Critical, Gender, Queer, Critical Race Theory, Marxist, Psychological, Biographical, Historical, etc.) (note, for biographical and historical, you need to bring in research to support your claims).
This paper is an extended version of the textual analysis assignment you have been practicing. Please review the Dos and Don’ts of Textual Analysis Papers on Canvas, which includes tips for this type of analysis, as well as references to relevant sections of our textbook.
Do not simply summarize or give a personal response to the text.
Analyze the author’s use of literary elements or their words (quotes) as a major part of your evidence.
You are not restricted to discussing just one of these elements, and you can choose devices not mentioned here, but the best analyses will focus on only one or two elements.
The rubric on Canvas will be used to grade the essay. You will be given a High Pass, Pass, or Not Yet on this assignment, which will be recorded as 20 points for a High Pass, 15 points for a Pass, and 10-5 for Not Yet).
