Part 2 must be completed, and uploaded to Blackboard, before 3pm on 11th May 2021

This workbook is to be used in conjunction with the Study Guide available in the PCDP area of Blackboard and at https://spark.adobe.com/page/4tzpS8vszBuSH/.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this workbook, you should:-

• Be able to explain your preferences for learning,
• Be able to apply this learning to your study and personal development and provide evidence of this application
• Have enhanced awareness of your strengths and resources available
• Be able to summarise what you have learnt about academic writing, academic malpractice, and presentation skills
• Have resources to support your academic, personal and career development
• Be able to describe and demonstrate the use of reflection
• Appreciate what is meant by, and be able to cultivate, a ‘growth mindset’

SOME TIPS FOR REFLECTIVE WRITING
Within your workbook, you will be writing reflectively, demonstrating the ability to reflect on your personal strengths, areas of challenge and development.

Reflective writing within your PCDP Workbook is:-
• Written in the first person e.g. ‘I…’
• Focussed on your experiences, thoughts, feelings and assumptions,
• A record of your thoughts, experiences and development which you can return to throughout your course,
• Honest and spontaneous: When reflecting on your life, and study at university, be honest with yourself; the idea is for you to identify not only your strengths, but also the areas you need to work on. Your Academic Advisor is also there to support you in developing your strengths and to help you to work on any areas for improvement.
• Focussed on enhancing awareness and skills to assist in your development. You will be expected to put together Action Plans that are designed to help you improve and develop your skills.

ACTIVITY 1: TRANSITIONS
Reflect on the questions below and answer them as fully as you can
(Remember to use the Study Guide in conjunction with this Workbook)
1. How do you feel that University is, or will be, different from your previous experience of learning?

2. In what ways, if any, do you think that the expectations of your University professors and tutors might be different from those who taught you previously?

3. What do you consider to be the greatest challenges facing you as part of this process of transition?

4. How do you feel about learning online?

5. What, if any, anxieties do you have about beginning your degree? (this can include anxiety about study, about Covid-19, about creating new friendships, etc – remember only your academic advisor and you will be able to see your answers).

ACTIVITY 2: LEARNING TO LEARN
This week’s activity focusses on enhancing your awareness of your learning preferences, an awareness which is important to your success at University and also to your success in communication, job applications and interviews.

Reflect on the questions below and answer them as fully as you can
(Remember to use the Study Guide in conjunction with this Workbook.)
1.What have you learnt about yourself from these two questionnaires? – include the results here and what they mean to you.

2. What types of things do you learn easily and/or quickly? To what extent can this be explained by what you have learnt from these questionnaires? What examples can you give of these learning preferences in action?

3. How can you use what you have learned here to further develop your learning/communication?

4. What, if any, similarities do you see between the two ways of categorising approaches to learning i.e. learning styles?

5. How useful do you find these approaches to learning? What, if any, criticisms do you have?

ACTIVITY 3: BUILDING ON STRENGTHS TO REACH YOUR GOALS
Winston Churchill, the war time English Prime Minister, is reported as having said that if you ‘Fail to plan, you plan to fail’. In today’s very hectic world, it is likely that, even with the best of intentions, distractions may get in the way of achieving our goals. Planning can help to prevent that from happening and enable you to make your goals a reality. Use the Study Guide to read the questions, and accompanying text, and post your answers below.

REFLECT ON THE QUESTIONS IN THE STUDY GUIDE AND ANSWER THEM IN THE BOXES BELOW
1. What are your goals for your time at University? (think not only of your academic and career goals but your personal goals too). These should be smart, i.e. specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound.

2. Looking back over your life to date, list the various roles which you have played e.g. student, friend, cook, carer, comic, daughter, brother.

3. Use your answer to qu.2 to help you list at least 40 strengths which you have and which you have evidenced within the various roles you have played within your life. If you can not list at least 40 strengths, you are selling yourself short and need to think again.

4. Looking back at your goals from qu.1, what resources do you already have to support you in meeting them. How might the strengths and experience you have identified in questions 2 and 3 help?

5. What other resources might you need to reach these goals? (these resources may take the form of personal attributes such as confidence in interviews, skill based attributes such as awareness of academic writing expectations, etc).

6. When do you hope to achieve your goals? When will you take the first step towards achieving them? How will you feel when you have reached these goals?

ACTIVITY FOUR: ESSAY WRITING
You will have learnt about approaches to writing academic essays in the lecture and seminar over the last couple of weeks. This week, we would like you to take ‘Action’ to enhance your essay writing and to complete the My Learning Essentials
• Understanding your task
• Writing your essay

You may also find it useful to look at ‘What’s the Big Idea?’ (also part of My Learning Essentials MLE)

In the box below, post a screenshot of the final page of each exercise. You can see an example below. Also answer the question.

ACTIVITY 4 Post your screenshots in the space below:-

What are the key things which you have learnt from completing these activities? How will you utilise this learning?

ACTIVITY 5: PLAGIARISM AND ACADEMIC MALPRACTICE
A couple of years ago, I (Elaine) took the role of Programme Director for the BSc Management degree. Within this role, I often had to accompany students to academic tribunals and they were as bad as they sound, with the student on ‘trial’ for plagiarism or academic malpractice. Most of the time, the student had no intention of ‘cheating’, they just lacked understanding of how to correctly reference for University. We are determined to ensure that this never happens to you!!!!

ACTIVITY 5: ACADEMIC MALPRACTICE
Post your screenshots of the final page of each exercise in the space below:-

Undertake the three exercises indicated in the Study Guide and post your screenshots below.

What are the key things which you have learnt from completing these activities and from the lecture and seminar too? How will you utilise this learning to ensure that you cite and reference correctly?

ACTIVITY 6: PREPARING FOR YOUR 1:1 WITH YOUR ADVISOR

We are now moving on to the reflection stage of the learning cycle, complete your reflections on the questions in the Study Guide and post the answers in the Table below. This document should then be printed off and taken to the meeting with your advisor.

During the first semester:
 Hopefully you will have settled into the university, your programme and blended learning
 You have attended lectures and seminars.
 You have developed your note taking, essay writing skills, listening and teamwork skills, as well as lots of subject-specific things.

REFLECT ON THE QUESTIONS IN THE STUDY GUIDE AND TYPE THE ANSWERS IN THE BOXES BELOW
1. How do you feel this semester has gone so far? Are there any areas of your life and study that are not working out as well as you would like?

2. Is there anything which you are not happy about or which you feel is getting in the way of your progress to date?

3. Reflect on what you have learnt about essay writing so far and write down key actions which you will take to improve below. (Remember to make your actions SMART – ie specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time specific).

4. Look back at your earlier goals (Activity 3): do these need revising? What practical steps can you take to make sure that you achieve your goals and tackle any challenges?

ACTIVITY 7: PLANNING TO SUCCEED IN YOUR EXAMS

By now, you are reaching the end of semester one and will need to start preparing for your January exams. It is also important to take time to reflect upon, and review your progress to date.

ACTIVITY 7: EXAM SUCCESS
Complete my My Learning Essentials online resource ‘Revision Strategies’
Take screen shot of the last page of the completed exercise and post in the box below.

ACTIVITY 8: DEVELOPING A GROWTH MINDSET

This week, we will be exploring the impact of mindset on our ability to succeed and to learn.

ACTIVITY 8: GROWTH MINDSET
Complete my My Learning Essentials online resource ‘Developing a Growth Mindset’
Take screen shot of the last page of the completed exercise and post in the box below.

ACTIVITY 9: TAKING STOCK
So, here you are at the end of your first semester at AMBS, a semester made particularly challenging by studying in the midst of a pandemic. Take a minute to reflect on your achievements and on the challenges which you have faced.

ACTIVITY 9: TAKING STOCK
Choose a particular challenge or achievement and write answers to the following questions below.
1. Describe your particular challenge or achievement. What happened?
2. How did you feel?
3. What was good/less good about the incident?
4. What can you conclude from this?
5. What would you do differently or how can you spread this achievement to other areas of your life?

6. What would your advice be to next year’s first years taking this course?

You have now come to the end of Part I of the Study Guide and Workbook – WELL DONE- and you should submit your workbook to turnitin before 3pm on 23rd February 2021.
