Art culture and history

Directions: After you have read and viewed the required content this week, discuss some of the following questions using examples from the Kaphar, Golden & Williams (optional reading) viewings/readings and the issues they raise. Don’t feel you have to answer all these questions–start from what you feel are important issues raised this week go from there:

What should be the role of art or creative works in culture? And what are the stakes if, as Titus Kaphar suggests, the art or artifacts we view in our daily lives can have an affect, especially on those that may already feel marginalized? If we accept that creative works might shape and form culture (and cultural thought), then what do we do with art or artifacts that no longer reflect our cultural values? Should some art be destroyed, moved, marginalized or even banned (or “cancelled” in more current terminology)? Or not?

This is not about being right or wrong–just show that you are giving thought to some of the issues raised this week, which certainly seem to connect with our present cultural/historical moment.

Write no less than 275-300 words total. More is fine, but don’t feel you have to write an essay.

No outside sources are allowed. As with most assignments in this class, I do not expect or want you to do research or use any other sources–I want to hear what you think, not what others think.
